The Future Sound of Radio 

In 1997, long before streaming platforms and algorithmic playlists reshaped how people discovered music, Dave Wakeham was already pushing the boundaries of what radio could be. From a studio in Hamburg, he crafted The Future Sound of Radio, a weekly three-hour program that captured the pulse of the global underground. Every Saturday night from 8 to 10 p.m., the show went out live from Munich, where Evosonic Radio broadcast it across Europe via satellite and throughout Germany on cable.

At a time when electronic music culture was still largely local—specific to scenes, cities, and clubs—Wakeham worked with a different vision. The Future Sound of Radio wasn’t just a playlist; it was a cultural exchange. The show blended global dance grooves, cutting-edge club sounds, and emerging electronic genres with experimental music that rarely found a home on mainstream airwaves.

What made the program especially dynamic was its reliance on real-time input from active DJs and producers. Feedback, fresh promos, test pressings, and unreleased tracks even mini disks flowed into the show every week, shaping each broadcast into a living document of the electronic scene as it evolved. Evosonic Radio itself played a historic role in shaping that era. In 1997, it became the first station to broadcast live from the Love Parade, transmitting directly from its own fixed stage via ISDN to the station then to listeners all across Europe. For many, it was the first time they experienced the sound and energy of Berlin’s most iconic electronic event without being there in person.

Yet the essence remains the same: a belief in the power of sound to connect people, challenge conventions, and shape culture. That spirit, born in a small studio and beamed across a continent, continues to echo in today’s digital landscape.
